EN – Aggregation of individuals of an aposematic species increases the aposematic message to their enemies and so eliminates the preying possibility.

Kermes ilicis, K. vermilio (Hem.: Kermesidae)

ΕΛ – Τα έντομα του γένους Kermes προσβάλλουν τους νεαρούς βλαστούς του πουρναριού. Το θηλυκό του, προσκολλάται στα φύλλα και παραμένει ακίνητο μέχρι να εναποθέσει τα αβγά του. Τα άτομα αυτά συλλέγονται και χρησιμοποιούνται εδώ και χιλιετίες για την παρασκευή κόκκινης βαφής γνωστής ως «κρεμέζι» (χρώμα κρεμεζί).

EN – Insects that are found in southern Europe and feed on the sap of the small evergreen kermes oak, Quercus coccifera. The females produce a red dye, also called «kermes», that is the source of natural crimson, a natural red dye obtained from the dried bodies of the female insects.
